...and perform the prayer for My Remembrance. [20: 14]
You enter the masjid for Isha’ prayer – you missed the first rak’ah and the imam is already in tasleem. So the prayer ends and you stand up for another ra’kah, and then another, and then another...
(hey, wait a minute, how many rak’ahs do I have again?)
You’re praying with a friend and you notice them doing something funny with their index finger...
(stop that man, that’s not how to do it! You gotta move it like this!) Sound familiar?
In fact, it sounds a bit too familiar, doesn’t it?
It is the tragedy of our times. In our homes and our masajid, coast to coast, distinguishing neither west nor east - we find ourselves praying, but not praying. Calmness of heart has replaced itself with a state of constant confusion. The very act so beloved to hearts of the righteous souls of the past, has become a 5 minute exercise of quickly uttered words and motions.
And what of the beauty we have left behind? The Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam described the power of salah with beautiful analogy:
Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him narrates: I heard the Messenger of Allah saying:
“Tell me; if a stream flows by the house of a person and he baths in it five times a day, will any dirt will remain on his body?" The companions replied: “No dirt will remain on him".
The Prophet (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) said, “that is the likeness of the 5 prayers, Allah forgives sins by them...”[Bukharee]
A building cannot stand without a proper foundation. Likewise, our belief in Allah is not complete without manifesting itself in action and this action is the prayer. As Allah Himself describes, it is the Servants of the Most Merciful who:
“spend the night before their Lord, prostrate and standing”[ 25: 64 ].

THERE IS NO BETTER TIME THAN NOW!
Think back to all the times you’ve stood facing Allah in prayer. 10, 15, 20, even 30 years of salah! Now that should be impressive, but it’s not because while we can account for their number, what can we possibly say of their quality?
Now think about this. The first thing we will be questioned about on the Day of Judgement is our prayers. What will our excuse be? What will we have to fall back on?
By the mercy of Allah, you are alive and healthy. You have been given ability and intellect enough to be reading this right now. Alhamdulilah! But what is greater than all of this is that you have in your possession the greatest blessing given to mankind – time. Time is what we fall back on. I’ll have time to do it all later...but, will you? All that you really have is this moment – what will you do with it? Seize it, or squander it?
Dear brother or sister, this is YOUR opportunity to spend 2 full weekends – that’s an entire 6 days – learning IN DEPTH about the most important act of worship you will ever perform. The time to change is now, so what are you waiting for?
