It is evident, then, that these natural feelings act as fog: blurring our hindsight and preventing us from seeing the big picture.

The question then is: in these trying times, how do we use hikmah (wisdom) instead of emotion when taking the right course of action for our Ummah?

Join us for a special Ilminar as we answer this very question and in co-operation with Islamic Relief launch a unique ONLINE fundraising effort for our brothers and sisters in Gaza. They live in a town of 300 thousand, (about the size of windsor, Ontario, Canada).

2. About less then 1% of the Muslim students in Bradford have heard of Muhammad Alshareef, or AlMaghrib Institute. (We are talking about the potential students, not the general public here).

3. They have NEVER had an AlMaghrib promo in their city.

4. They have NEVER had an AlMaghrib instructor lead the jumu'ah prayer.

5. No other AlMaghrib-like institute exists in the area, or has conducted seminars there.

6. They had less then 2 months to prepare this farm town for AlMaghrib MEGA Qabeelah status.

7. Their first glimpse of AlMaghrib would require them to pay 97 pounds, about $200 USD.

8. I did not post even once in their Banu folder. The first time I started researching them was on the flight from London to Manchester on the Friday of the seminar.Halal drum roll please ....

Forget Obama, the real news is: BANU NORTH UK!!!THEIR FIRST SEMINAR: 287 SOLD OUT STUDENTS!!!!THEIR FIRST SEMINAR: NO ROOM TO SITTHEIR FIRST SEMINAR: BEAT EVERY SINGLE PREVIOUS FIRST SEMINAR RECORD, INCLUDING TORONTO, LONDON, NEW YORK ....and it's just the first weekend of their first seminar.

Ma sha Allah, I am soooo proud of my brothers and sisters in Bradford. I have to tell you a secret. I was walking late at night on Sunday with one of the London brothers, and I said, "Y'know, I love the city of Bradford more than I love the city of London." He said, "I know shaykh, it shows."Their Qabeelah folder is way at the bottom, but don't worry. You'll soon be seing it near the top. They've won my vote.Let's give a hearty AlMaghrib welcome to Qabeelat Mass.

AlMaghrib's 1st Ilminar

When a new AlMaghrib seminar is announced in your city,

Do you count the days down?

Do you dream about the first Friday?

We've all wished for the days to speed up or to just get a taste of that spectacular new AlMaghrib seminar.

It is with illustrious excitement that AlMaghrib Institute presents:

www.almaghrib.org/ilminar/

Ilminar: LIVE webinars presenting exclusive seminar PREVIEW

Join us for the LIVE Ilminar with Yaser Birjas on the evolution of fiqh.

What: The Code Evolved: Evolution of Fiqh Ilminar
When: Saturday, October 11th, 2008, at 10:00 PM EST (NYC Time)
With: Shaykh Yaser Birjas
Where and How: LIVE ONLINE VIDEO & AUDIO
RSVP here: www.almaghrib.org/ilminar/

Introducing Eman Rush Press ©

BY SH YASER BIRJAS, EMAN RUSH PRESS:

What images come to mind when you read the words

SCHOLARLY CENTER FOR ISLAMIC RESEARCH

What feelings are suddenly stirred when you hear the words

A BUZZING HUB OF SCHOLARLY KNOWLEDGE

Where do your thoughts go when you contemplate

A PRICELESS COLLECTION OF JOURNALS, SCROLLS, AND PUBLICATIONS

You may have imagined the Cordoba of long ago

You may have felt the love for learning like Imam Malik and Imam Ahmad

You may have thought of the lost Grand Library of Baghdad

I thought of…

EmanRush Press©

and the legacy it will leave

AlMaghrib Institute is excited to embark on a new journey to realizing its vision:

“to become the most beneficial learning system in the history of Ummat Muhammad, sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam” and “to build sincere, dedicated and brilliant students of knowledge who will go on to become leaders, bringing their communities to new heights.”

stay tuned…

Ilm Summit 2008 Comes to a Close!

Bismillah

Alhamdulilah. Alhamdulillah, alhamdulillah, that cool scuba diving shaykh is coming on board full time with AlMaghrib Institute as VICE PRESIDENT!

That's right. Alhamdulillah, Shaykh Waleed is going to be Vice President of AlMaghrib Institute, primarily in the USA operations, but because AlMaghrib is international, his leadership will be carried into both Canada and the UK.

For those of you who have had the good fortune of being taught by Shaykh Waleed, you will know that he brings in an air of creativity and passion to his teaching that is soooo refreshing and inspiring.

The awesome thing is that creativity and passion is now going to be felt on an AlMaghrib HQ level, Shaykh Waleed in charge.

Please welcome the coolest Shaykh who one the Quran competition vote (remember that one, the one I lost). ...

[Ok, here's a personal story. So like, when Shaykh Waleed was in Toronto, I just had to check how was it possible that he beat me in the Quran competition. We were going back/forth who would lead the Maghrib salah, and I told him, "Shaykh Waleed, you lead it cause I have to check you out." By Sunday, I was sitting with my mom and she said, "Muhammad, just face it, Shaykh Waleed reads better then you." Ok, admitted. Shaykh Waleed you rock! May Allah keep you and your family safe always, in this life and the next.]

Ok, one more thing. I insist with AlMaghrib workers that we have fun. Like, fun is our middle name. If you are working for AlMaghrib, you've gotta have fun or your fired. So, Shaykh Waleed is a natural to our AlMaghrib culture. He's is like one of the coolest people that you could call your Ustadh, and friend.
---

Visit the thread here: http://forums.almaghrib.org/showthread.php?t=27028

Mouthwatering New Course!

From Academic Dean of Affairs, ABU AMMAAR SH YASIR QADHI

Salaam Alaikum

It gives me immense pleasure to announce the newest course that AlMaghrib Institute will be teaching. It is a course that I've been wanting to do for quite a while now.

It is a fiqh course concentrating on two issues:
- the fiqh of food and drink
- the fiqh of clothing and dress.

These are the types of issues that we've been talking about for years and years, but rarely ever read or discuss in an academic manner. So the goal is to mention the evidences and the various opinions of the ulamaa and madhahib about these issues.

Of course, top on the list is the ever-juicy topic: the 'halaal' meat issue!! But loads of other issues as well, such as: what are the general guidelines for figuring out what is or is not permissible to eat and drink? What constitutes something that is najas? What if a food item has a small amount of najas in it? What are the evidences that the hijab clothing that is worn by our sisters is not just a 'cultural' item but an Islamic one? What is the verdict of wearing 'non-Islamic' clothes? How about body-piercing? For brothers?! And many, many more...

So, since I'm in the process of writing up the curriculum of the class, what I want from all of you is to suggest specific issues on your mind that this class should cover.

Keep in mind that this will be a ONE WEEKEND seminar, so I'll have to choose which issues are more of a priority than others. I aim to start teaching this course insha Allah from 2009.

Who wants to go first?

Yasir

(Post your contributions on the AlMaghrib student forums)

Qabeelat Al-Shams: Biggest First Class EVER!

Bismillah

So alhamdulilah, here comes a new POWER HOUSE QABEELAT...

They have not only broken the record of highest attendance for a first class BUT got more students than the majority of the Qabeelahs in AlMaghrib history.

With the exception of Durbah's Fiqh of Love, they've schooled every single Qabeelah in America so far, walhamdulilah!

Next class in Al-Shams 1001 attendance, bi idhnillah....

(all of a sudden Majd looks like a lil' baby=p)

Visit this thread for details!

Ilm Summit 2008 APPLICATION

FROM Sh YASIR QADHI, Dean of Academic Affairs

Salaam Alaikum

Well, here it is guys:

http://almaghrib.org/summit/

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING CAREFULLY:

1) Make sure your e-mail address is absolutely correct; this is the primary way we will be contacting you.

2) Do NOT apply if you do not seriously think you have the time or required enthusiasm to be a student at IlmSummit. In other words, don't have a 'Let's see if I can get in and if I do we'll figure out if I can go or not' attitude. To pull out after you've been accepted is a major waste of all of our times and resources; to be honest it shows you are not serious in the first place (obviously family emergencies, etc., that appear are a different matter).

3) Please DO apply if you have the time and energy but are worried about finances. We are accepting students based on merit, not money. Hence there are no empty blanks to fill out on this form regarding money issues. Once you get in, we will try our best to see if you can get a scholarship, either from us or other resources. But do realize that the maximum amount of scholarship we can give is around 30 to 40 % of the price; hence you're still looking at some amount.

4) There will be a waiting list of acceptees as well. If for some reason someone cannot make it and cancels, we will admit the next person on the list, and move down, until all 100 slots are filled up.

5) If a husband/spouse are applying together, PLEASE mention the spouse's name in the final slot; otherwise we have no way of pairing up acceptees.

6) There are NO requirements for tazkiya letters, but if you want to mention specific teachers/Imams that you've studied with you may mention them in the last section.

Any other questions regarding the process? Here's the place to post them...

DEADLINE: 30th MAY , 2008

Note: Please apply as soon as possible if you are serious about attending, as we will start sifting thru these applications on a weekly basis. We hope to announce the initial list within the first weeks of June, after which an immediate deposit amount will be required.

Muhammad Alshareef London Tour!

Check it out!

NEW: Dean of Academic Affairs!

From SH MUHAMMAD ALSHAREEF, Founder, AlMaghrib Institute

--

Bismillah was salatu was salamu 'ala Rasoolillaah

It is with immense happiness that myself and the entire staff of AlMaghrib Institute welcomes Sh.Yasir Qadhi to the administration side of AlMaghrib Institute.

Many of you have noticed that a lot of our focus is on the da'wah, getting people into the seminars, getting them to the exams ...

... but there are students who not only attend the exams, they do so with EXCELLENCE. And most of the time they don't get much recognition. It's a retreat dedicated to the DEDICATED students, by invitation and application only. Yaser Birjas and myself will be resident (on-site) for the entire two weeks. The other Instructors will come for stints, and other guest speakers will come as well.

We will cover: tajweed, tafseer, Uloom al-Quran, Mustalah al-Hadeeth, Hadeeth, Fiqh, Usool al-Fiqh, Qawaid, History, Dawah, and perhaps some aspects of Arabic language. Additionaly, we will invite speakers in other specialities (not necessarily 'Islamic') that are essential for us as Western Muslims to be familiar with. Tentatively, we might include workshops on khutbah/speech techniques, managing Islamic Centers, organzing conferences, and other practical information that we would expect these participants to find useful in their dawah.

Each of the 'classical' sciences will obviously not be covered in its entirety (except for tajweed). Rather, in each field, we will choose a sub-section and cover it to a level that our experienced and mature students deserve. Thus, for example, in fiqh, we shall cover all of the chapters of taharah up to shurut al-salat, in all four madhabs, from a standard matn in each madhab, then we will go back and do fiqh al-muqaran of those same issues. In Uloom al-Quran, we will cover in detail the compilation of the Quran between Muslim scholarship and Orientalist views. In history we will cover the rise and fall of Muslim Spain and the lessons learned from that experience. And so forth...

For Tajweed, if there is an interest, we might offer 'ijaazahs' in the Quran for those who are qualified (i.e., huffadh). For others, we will teach one-on-one to the greatest extent possible.

The program will be open for brothers and sisters (sorry, no babysitting facilities available!) who have taken AlMaghrib classes, and who will be committed to two solid weeks of learning.
SERIOUS STUDENTS ONLY - LAZY STUDENTS NEED NOT APPLY!!!!

Although all AlMaghrib students can apply, we will NOT accept students on a first-come-first-serve basis. Rather, there will be an application process and all students will be screened exhaustively, and ONLY the best students will be chosen.

Criterion that will decide who gets chosen are:
1) Number of AlMaghrib seminars attended, with exam, and high pass
2) Amount of Quran memorized
3) Level of activism in the community

Students from all over North America are welcome to apply, and our goal is to accept students from ALL Qabeelahs.

Cost and location of the program is still being formulated, but will cover everything, from room/board, to transportation from/to airport, etc. All that will be required in addition to this will be the plane ticket.

The date has been scheduled for the 1st to the 18th of August and the location of this years Ilm Summit 2008 will be in Houston, Texas.

All students are expected to arrive by Friday the 1st of Auguest, and leave Monday the 18th of August.

There will be exams and projects for these students as well, and MAJOR prizes will be given out to the top students.

Oh, and those who get chosen first time round and pass the exams will automatically get chosen next year as well.

Yes, you heard me right, this is an annual event.

YASIR QADHI, Dean of Academic Affairs

IlmFest New York 2008

Email nyalmaghrib@gmail.com for more information on this event.

Perished Nations - Live in Ottawa

As salamu alaykum,
It's been a long time since I did a Halaqah series. A LONG time.

So if i'm going to do it, it's got to be FAN - tastic! In sha Allah.
The Imam of the Ottawa Main Masjid was really insisting upon a Halaqah series, so may Allah reward him. I agreed.

The topic is a topic that I found repeated again and again in the Quran. The topic of Nations and how/why they perished. So I chose it for this Halaqah Series:

Who: The Ottawa Muslim Association presents Sh.Muhammad Alshareef
What: "Perished Nations" 4 Part Halaqah Series
When: Each Tuesday Feb 19, 26, March 4, 11
Where: Ottawa Main Masjid and Online for www.SuccessInIslam.com free subscribers

In sha Allah, my intention is to provide the audio within 24 hours of each lecture. To be the first informed of the available audio, join my mailing list at:

www.SuccessInIslam.com

AlMaghrib Forums in Western Universities

Here is an email we received:

-----------------------------------
I just thought i would share some interesting and nice news that i just heard. A friend of mine who is studying history at Michigan State University was sitting in class the other day and his proffessor who is tenured and a PHd was talking about Islam and authenticity and how we grade our hadith and so on. In order to show the class some points on Hadith he opened a web page and guess what it was. It was our forums! He talked about hadith and used some of the topics on our forums as references.

AlMaghrib UK: Coming in April!

Bismillah,

In shaa Allah, AlMaghrib UK's first seminar will be held April 4-6, 11-13 2008 In shaa Allah ta'ala, taught by sh Muhammad Alshareef.

REGISTER ONLINE NOW!

Route 114 SOLD OUT!

Bismillah

The sold out sign has been put up!
