This is Yasir Qadhi.

Well, we finally did it. Alhamdulillah, AlMaghrib Institute has hit the big 3-0. Not in terms of years (although that too will happen, bi-idhniAllah, and we pray that when it does we will all look back in awe and amazement at how far we have progressed with the blessings of Allah). Not in years, but in cities.

Yes, you heard right. Soon, AlMaghrib will be operating simultaneously in THIRTY cities across the Western world (just imagine, insha Allah, when we add the Eastern cities to this list!).

Since thirty is such a nice and beautiful number, we really had to choose a super-awesome city to do justice to it and the Institute.

A city that is near and dear to many of us (and home to one of our super-star Instructors)...

A city that has great historic significance, going back to ancient Roman times...

A city whose very name is associated with key events in the development the modern Western tradition, home of the real 'Industrial Revolution', and the intellectual birth place of Socialism and Marxism...

A city that houses the UK's larget shopping mall (although I don't know if these last two are things to be proud of?) ...

And finally, for everyone else in the entire world besides myself and a handful of hard-core Chomskyites who agree that watching sports is the opium of the masses and the distraction that elites nurture and crave, a city that has achieved world fame because it is able to pay millions and millions of pounds to guys in shorts who run back and forth kicking a ball between two poles and over and around people wearing strange-coloured * t-shirts while following some rather nonsensical man-made rules....

This past Tuesday, AlMaghrib Institute had an online fundraiser.

A Picture is Worth 1000 Words: Still-Picture Contest

Everyone loves looking at pictures and everyone loves a contest. So why not have an AlMaghrib still-picture contest?

With over a hundred seminar, thousands of students, and amazing promotional events happening all year round, just imagine the number of picture-perfect moments that have been captured on camera and may still be sitting on someone's memory card.

We're looking to bring out the best pictures - anything related to AlMaghrib - from instructors, seminars to volunteers and promotional events. If it's AlMaghrib-related, it fits!

Contest Rules:

1. Anyone and everyone can participate.

2. Pictures do not have to be taken by the participants themselves: search online, forums, facebook etc so long as someone hasn't already entered the same picture in the contest.

Qabeelat Majd Sponsors 96 Orphans

In Toronto's recent seminar, Divine Link, local student body Qabeelat Majd teamed up with Islamic Relief Canada to raise the standard for Qabeelah social services.

Contributions from 500 AlMaghrib students combined to raise $70,854 to sponsor a total of 96 orphans.

AlMaghrib Institute encourages its Qabeelahs to raise the standard of social services in its communities as a way to give back through its Social and Community Service initiative: ChariTree.

An example of some community service efforts conducted throughout the 2009 year was community clean up: local student bodies were encouraged to assist in cleaning a masjid, a local park, body of water or road.

London, UK shatters its own record

London does it again!

With the Tawfeeq of Allah (swt) and all Praise due to Him, the launch of Shaykh Abu Eesa's Divine Link: Fiqh of Salah has taken London by storm. Initially sold out 2 months in advance, local student body, Qabeelat AlShams, quickly worked to secure a larger venue at the Hilton to accommodate 665 eager students!

Sold out again and many more showing up at the door, Qabeelat AlShams impressively made space for 700 students to study one of the most important aspects of their Deen: the Fiqh of Salah.

Shaykh Abu Eesa's next visit is in Toronto this very weekend to teach Divine Link, also currently sold out at 500!

Muslims gather for weekend of learning about their faith

An adult convert to Islam, Ify Okoye spent her first couple of years
learning about the religion from books. It wasn't until the Beltsville woman
started going to seminars given by the AlMaghrib Institute that she really began
to understand her new faith.
"I look at my Islam completely as the pre-AlMaghrib phase and the
post-AlMaghrib phase," says the 25-year-old Okoye, a student at Bowie State
University. "After attending my first class, I see there's such a breadth and
depth to the Islamic tradition, and also a real practical intellectual tradition
that's vibrant, that can work today, that Muslims in America can use."

This annoucement for me is like when your local sports team announces that one of the greatest players in the game is now going to be wearing your jersey. (My heart is beating fast right now with excitment)

When I was very young, little kid in a Masjid in Winnipeg, the uncles gathered the youth together for a lecture from this vising speaker from Toronto. I loved his lecture, and I was so impressed that he was using names and terms that I, as a kid, was familiar with. (come to think of it, that may be the first time I was exposed to that style, it became my style years later). It was sh.Abdullah Hakim Quick.

Recently, I've been to a half dozen or so conferences with sh.Abdullah Hakim Quick was also one of the speakers. I find that when there is a crowded room at these conferences and you are looking for someone familiar, someone comfortable, someone you know you can enjoy your evening sitting beside and discussing things with ... I will always gravitate to sh.Abdullah Hakim Quick (and alhamdulillah, I hope I've read it correctly, he also enjoys my company in the same way. At least I hope so, lol.)

Here is his bio:

Abdullah Hakim Quick was born in the United States and accepted Islam in Canada in 1970. He graduated from the College of Da‘wah and Usul al-Din at the Islamic University of Medina in 1979. He obtained an M.A. and a PhD in African history at the University of Toronto, where he examined the life of the West African scholar and social activist, Usman Dan Fodio A. H. Quick has been a teacher and counsellor in Canada, the United States, and the West Indies. He has travelled to more than 55 countries around the world teaching and doing research.

Currently, he is Senior Lecturer at The True Dawn Institute and a member of the Muslim Judicial Council. He is also Director of the Discover Islam Centre in Cape Town, South Africa

2 US for 2 UK Instructors

'Tis the season to introduce new instructors. With 2 UK instructors introduced already, we are excited to welcome 2 more from the US.

Dr. Ali Shehata will quickly take the title of one of AlMaghrib Institute's powerhouse instructors. Students will love his unique and well prepared presentations using traditional and modern resources. He studied under many scholars in the U.S and Egypt and currently practices medicine full-time as an Emergency and Family Medicine physician currently living in the Florida area. Dr. Ali, as he is known to many, has acquired ijaazahs in several core Islamic texts including al-Aqeedah al-Waasitiyah and The Forty Hadith of al-Nawawi among others. Dr. Ali brings a fresh perspective and flavor to the AlMaghrib scene.

Dr. Ali is scheduled to teach in Memphis inshaAllah.

Shaykh Shpendim Nadzaku has an intriguing name that roots back to an intriguing country reflecting his even more intriguing character. Born in 1973 to Albanian parents in the beautiful city of Ohrid Macedonia, his parents immigrated to America when he was just a year old. He was raised in New Jersey and soon took to the University of Madina where he graduated from the College of Shariah in 2001. His passion for the Arabic language made him one of my main sources of translating Arabic classical texts to English, especially poetry. He is currently the Imam/Religious Director with the Muslim Association of Greater Rockford and is currently an MBA student at Rockford College. With his spectacular smile, outstanding teaching skills and down-to-Earth character, Shaykh Shpendim brings a fresh style of learning to the AlMaghrib classrooms.

Since his introduction, Shaykh Shpendim taught in New York City and is scheduled to soon teach in Atlanta and Columbus, inshaAllah.
