Mouthwatering New Course!

From Academic Dean of Affairs, ABU AMMAAR SH YASIR QADHI

Salaam Alaikum

It gives me immense pleasure to announce the newest course that AlMaghrib Institute will be teaching. It is a course that I've been wanting to do for quite a while now.

It is a fiqh course concentrating on two issues:
- the fiqh of food and drink
- the fiqh of clothing and dress.

These are the types of issues that we've been talking about for years and years, but rarely ever read or discuss in an academic manner. So the goal is to mention the evidences and the various opinions of the ulamaa and madhahib about these issues.

Of course, top on the list is the ever-juicy topic: the 'halaal' meat issue!! But loads of other issues as well, such as: what are the general guidelines for figuring out what is or is not permissible to eat and drink? What constitutes something that is najas? What if a food item has a small amount of najas in it? What are the evidences that the hijab clothing that is worn by our sisters is not just a 'cultural' item but an Islamic one? What is the verdict of wearing 'non-Islamic' clothes? How about body-piercing? For brothers?! And many, many more...

So, since I'm in the process of writing up the curriculum of the class, what I want from all of you is to suggest specific issues on your mind that this class should cover.

Keep in mind that this will be a ONE WEEKEND seminar, so I'll have to choose which issues are more of a priority than others. I aim to start teaching this course insha Allah from 2009.

Who wants to go first?

Yasir

Al salaam alikum-
MashaAllah on the very beneficial subject that u have chosen to teach. May Allah reward all of ur efforts. I guess some of my main concerns and wonders have been in regards to frying meats (like chicken) with pork, would that make eating the chicken sandwich HARAM?
The other thing is that if a desert is made with a small percentage of rum, does that make it HARAM to eat also? These two scenarios are of course foods that we get from restaurants, not that I would actually make it this way. jazakum Allah kheer!!

Some issues that have elicited questions in my mind:

> Imitating nonbelievers in dress
Q: how far is considered imitation if the culture you belong to is not a believing culture. Wasn't the Arab culture at one point non believing? Where to draw the line?

>Eating food from "holiday parties" (Christmas parties)
>Attending such parties
>How to respond to (happy valentines day etc.)
>Eating in a restaurant that serves wine if your not drinking it in ur table.
>Are you held accountable for the things you did not know, but had the opportunity to ask about, yet chose not to?
>Men wearing silk (is there a certain percentage that is permissible in clothes? e.g. in a tie? )
>Wedding bands--both genders
>White wedding dress--originated in western culture yet has become the norm in the Muslim world.
>Wedding cakes? (my understanding has been if it is not specifically associated with another religion then why not? I may be completely wrong)
>Something to mention--on men wearing gold--I believe there was a recent scientific study also that proves it is harmful to men.
> Haircuts: what are the parameters in Islam. I have heard that women should not cut their hair too short (above the ears) because that resembles men's haircuts. Is this true? How about very short haircuts that if were to be cut for men (in today's cultural norms) would be considered feminine? Would those haircuts be not permissible to women? Which cultural norms are we referring to, the ones we live in or those of the Muslim world? What are the Muslim world's cultural norms, aren't all fashion trends started in the west?

> Modesty in dress amongst members of the same gender? Are there any guidelines in Islam?
>Women uncovering hair in front of non Muslim women?

Thank you for choosing this topic. Jzak Allho khairan. This is a very necessary topic and one that has been overlooked in lots of lectures.

Walikum Asslam Brother Yasir,

The course sounds amazing and long needed. Some things that I would like to hear about would be:
- If we have 'haram' meat do we throw it out or can we give it to a kaffir to eat or the poor disbeliever?

Its an odd question/topic but I know I run into this problem sometimes (since I am a recent convert so my parents sometimes give me non-halal meat which I dont know what to do with)

I hope this may stir up some more points to include for this upcoming seminar. May Allah reward you brother Yasir for all your efforts - Again! May Allah reward you for your efforts.

As salaamu alaykum yaa Shaykh,

This sounds like the PERFECT course for so many of us who are worried or even - dare I say - paranoid about certain ingredients in foods.

Personally, I've also wondered about lotions/creams and the mysterious ingredients they contain.

It would be really nice if we could walk away with a list of ingredients we should definitely stay away from inshaa'Allah.

JazakAllahu Khayrun!!

wassalaam,
your sister in Islaam

Jazakallah Khair ya Ustaazuna for taking the intiative for this class. This class would actually take care of about half of the questions that we get every seminar.

Assalaam alaikum wa rahmatullah..

one issue I can think of is the what is permissible to wear during salah...tight clothing or pants for sisters, is that permissible?

Assalam-u-aliakum,

Please include the ruling on Nikab and the opinions about it. Specifically, the opinion of Ibn Abbas (RA) that all should be covered except one eye. Also, the opinion on wearing abaya verses wearing other loose clothing (skirt or pants)Specifically, interested in having a better understanding of ayat 59 of Sura Al-Ahzab, is this proof that women should wear abaya or does a long coat suffice.
A much needed course! Please do not wait too long to bring it to Toronto.

Please address the following if possible:
1. Food prepared by buddhist and hindus in american restaurants.
2. Halal meat cut by knife used to cut pork as well. Is the meat still halal?
3. Accepting invitations to bdays, thanksgiving and christmas parties and eating the food there.
4. comment on the Muslim sister's garb who participated in the olympic track and field events
5. Muslim womens swimwear (such as burqini and splash gear). Can a sister wear these and swim in public pools.
6. Appropriate clothing for women to jog outside in a park?
7. Niqab?
8. Saudi style jilbab. is it a must for all women?
9. using vanilla extract that contains alcohol

I have upto 2009 to send more ideas, right? OK then I am working on a bigger list and will be back insha-Allah. :-)

Assalaamu 'alaykum
I haven't read the other comments, so apologies for any repetition :)

I just wanted to comment on Sh. Yasir's saying that we are still trying to figure out what our (muslims living in the west) culture is. Since it's not an 'islamic' topic, i'd like to contribute my two pence. (If it were islam related, i would not offer my own personal opinion as we have to always refer to what scholars of the past and present say).
Ok, culture is not a static term. It evolves with time. So we cannot say, 'this' is my culture, it will keep changing (of course within the bounds of the sharia).
So, for myself living in the UK, if I wear an Indian hijab, a Saudi abaya and niqab, and a british overcoat, then that IS my culture. I'm not waiting to figure out what my culture is. In our times of travelling and communication, culture is fast evolving. In earlier times, one could easily distinguish cultures and define them precisely, but not in our times today, especially for us living in the west.
So for our generation, we are not in the process of figuring out our culture, we already have a culture which is evolving quickly, and will keep on changing. We are LIVING our culture.
I hope it makes sense what I'm trying to say. Please shaykh, could you comment on this. I'll be very interested to see what you think.
The only reason why I am putting my opinion across is because the topic of figuring out our culture is a general topic and does not necessitate islamic scholarship, it is an abstract concept. (stressing again that we remain within the shariah).

Also, on the topic of birthdays, I wanted to ask something that has been confusing me. If birthdays are not haram since no one today celebrates them because of Esa 'alaihis salaam's birthday (so it does not have a christian/religious connotation to it any more), then if there comes a time (hypothetical) when Christmas is celebrated just as a festival, with no christian significance (say 1000 years later), then will it be ok to partake in those christmas celebrations?

I hope these issues can be clarified by the shaykh.

Jazaakallaahukhayrun

Was salaam

My concerns....#1 Though we buy chicken from a halal(zabiha) store still in the initial stages of cooking some blood flows out of the meat. Isn't all the blood drained out from the chicken at the time of slaughtering, or the chicken is not slaughtered the islamic way?
#2 Is NAQAB (face covering)for women fard or preferred in Islam?
#3 Kosher is not necessarily Halal too, please explain.
#4 Eating from places where both Haram and Halal food is prepared should be avoided, due to risk of cross contamination, what do you say?
Jazak Allah Shaikh Yasir for doing a seminar about such an important and much needed topic. May Allah help and guide you. wassalam

Assalamu 'alaikum Shiekh Yasir

One issue that often came up with me is food being cook with wine and does it matter if the wine evaporates.

And I think everyone was avoiding mentioning this, THE BEARD. Actually it would be interesting to discuss the different opinions on trimming and shaving specific areas.

Jazakum Allahu khair for hosting this class
